Story Versus Grind: What Makes an RPG Worth It

Story Versus Grind: What Makes an RPG Worth It

March 28, 2026 · Lukas Berger

Every mobile RPG walks a tightrope between story and grind. Too much story and it feels like a visual novel. Too much grind and it feels like a chore with cutscenes.

The good ones tie leveling to the narrative. You grow stronger because the story demands it, not because a wall arbitrarily blocks your path. Embershards of Valen does this well — every power spike lines up with a new stretch of plot.

When grind exists just to slow you down, players notice. We can tell within an hour whether a game respects our time. The trick is making the grind fun in itself, so even the repetitive parts feel rewarding.

If you're picking a new RPG, watch how it handles the first difficulty wall. That moment tells you almost everything about the rest of the game.
